Why Own A Cleaning Franchise or Business?
One of the most over-looked franchise opportunities by
most entrepreneurs is the residential and commercial cleaning
business. At a glance most simply envision themselves cleaning
houses for the rest of their lives and quickly move on
to the dreamy ideas of owning a sandwich shop. The sad
fact of that is at the end of the day the two business
models are not as different as one may think.
While many
sub shop owners do spend some time actually making sandwiches
an owner of a cleaning franchise very rarely, if ever
does any cleaning. Beyond that fact, both owners focus
their efforts on people management, marketing, streamlining
their operations, and all the other facets that come with
owning a business. I would argue though that dollar for
dollar a cleaning franchise offers as great a ROI as just
about any franchise out there. Here's why.
High Demand, High Growth Industry
More and more middle - upper income American families are
outsourcing their domestic residential and commercial services.
With the explosion of 2 income families the demand for
outsourced cleaning services continues to grow.
Low Overhead Operations
Most cleaning franchises are run out of either a home
office or a small office and require minimal ongoing
overhead. Your primary expenses are directly related
to the amount of services you render.
Work During Business Hours Only
In the residential cleaning business most families prefer
to have their cleaning done while they are away at work,
between 9 - 5, Monday - Friday. The commercial cleaning
business is actually the reverse of this as most prefer
to have their office cleaned while they are at home.
Cleaning Is Easy Work
It may not be the most glamorous work at first glance,
but your employees do have advantages. It's easy work.
No heavy lifting and no real stress other than to do
a good job. You work indoors and typically within relatively
nice homes. Cleaning people seldom work weekends or holidays.
Does Not Require Skilled Labor
Anyone who's willing to work hard and be dependable can
make a great cleaning franchise employee. As a business
owner it's your job to train, motivate and reward them
to be top members of your team. This is a key area that
being a part of a franchise system has tremendous value.
Work Close To Home
Most cleaning franchise owners work within territories
close to their own homes. The cleaning business can be
a terrific lifestyle business and adding long commutes
can hinder that quality.
A Cleaning Franchise vs. A Cleaning Business Start-up
Kit
When talking with entrepreneurs about cleaning franchises
I commonly hear, "why would I invest that much into a franchise
when I can go buy one of those do-it-yourself business
startup kits instead?" I see them too, some even claiming
they can show you how to invest $100 and make $100k your
first year. My answer is this:
If you are simply looking to earn a living by going out
a cleaning friends and neighbors' homes then don't buy
a franchise. If you are looking to build a cleaning business
based on a nationally recognized brand and proven, existing,
supporting business models then you should consider a franchise. When
it comes to letting services into their homes and places
of business, especially unattended, american's either need
to know you personally or know your brand. There are few
industries where the power of a well known brand are as
valuable as the residential cleaning business.
